Faculty Travel Grant

The Latin American Area Center is pleased to announce its Travel Grant program for 2008. The primary purpose of the grant is to support activities that contribute to the long-term strengthening of the Latin American Studies academic and outreach programs at the University of Arizona by contributing to domestic and international travel expenses. Grants will be awarded up to US$ 500 and can be used towards transportation and lodging. The goal of the program is to improve area and language teaching related to Latin America at the University of Arizona, to increase the professional profile and leadership of Latin American area and language specialists at the university, and to support overall U.S. expertise related to the region.

The Travel Grant Competition is held twice a year (in October and March). The LAS travel grant committee usually takes about a month to conclude the competition and you must allow at least one month between the conclusion of the competition and the date of travel for the Center to process paperwork.

Domestic travel grants aim to support academic professionals and faculty participation in professional meetings such as congresses and other academic related events (e.g. LASA, CLASP, SALALM, etc.). Priority will be given those applicants whose papers, exhibitions or performances have been formally accepted or solicited by formal invitation or who are taking a leadership role within Latin American Studies (e.g. organizing interdisciplinary panels, chairing LASA sections, editing major journals).

According to Title VI guidelines, international travel support is intended for activities contributing to the overall enhancement of area and language training relating to Latin America and for the creation of institutional linkages. Priority is given to applications that show how the funding will improve the teaching of Latin American language or area studies at the University of Arizona (e.g. by obtaining curricula or library materials), overall U.S. expertise on Latin America, or will create longer terms links with Latin American scholars and institutions that benefit other faculty and students at the University of Arizona (e.g research collaborations, internships).

Please note that all international travel funded by Title VI must be on U.S. carriers, and must be approved by our program officer in Washington D.C. This means that you must provide the Center for Latin American Studies with your travel schedule at least six weeks prior to travel. The Title VI program requires you to submit a short (500 words) report within one month of returning from your trip. You must file a report to be eligible for any future CLAS funds.

Please submit your proposals by mail or e-mail by March 1st (for trips between April 15 and Oct 15) or September 1st (for trips between Oct 15th and April 15th )to the LAS Office at:
