Undergraduate Students

The Center for Latin American Studies and the University of Arizona provide a number of research grants for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The following list provides brief information on these opportunities and links to more information, deadlines, eligibility, and/or information on past research projects.

Governor Raul H. Castro Scholarship


Established by Governor Rául Castro and his colleagues, the scholarships are intended to develop a new generation of students committed to building bridges across the growing divide between Latin America and the United States. The scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding University of Arizona students who, as part of their training, have focused on Latin America and built on this commitment with extraordinary service learning. Students from the border region and those majoring in Latin American Studies will be given priority in the selection process, if their qualifications match those of other competitors. Faculty members are asked to nominate students and include in their letter how the student has or plans to meet the service learning requirement. Nominations should be sent to Dr. Rául Saba at the Center for Latin American Studies.


Roop Summer Career Paths Internship and Research Training Scholarships (RCPS)


The scholarships were established to help top Latin American Studies students participate in special summer career path defining programs they could not ordinarily afford. These programs could include: professional internships with NGOs, the private sector, or government agencies. It could also include participation in research in Latin America, special training seminars or study abroad programs. Applicants need to provide two letters of recommendation, a time-line of activities and a short essay about why the summer training is important to career development short budget. Students are advised to discuss their application with Dr. Raúl Saba, Center for Latin American Studies. Deadline March 1, 2008.


Edward J. Williams Research Scholarship

The fund provides annual summer research scholarships of $200 to $500 to undergraduate or graduate students conducting research in an area related to Edward Williams’ (Professor Emeritus) academic interests: U.S.-Mexico border issues; comparative border issues relating to Mexico and Latin America; Mexican politics, public policy or contemporary Mexican history; and U.S.-Mexico relations. Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy Border Research Directory

For more than a decade the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy has maintained an active research and outreach program on environmental issues concerning the U.S.-Mexico border region.
