Global Studies Travel Award Recipient: Michelle Palmer

Three of my greatest passions are music, culture, and dreams. I am enthralled by the brilliance of sound, so I am often found listening to jazz or symphonic music from movie soundtracks. My favorite movies to watch are epic fantasy films, like Lord of the Rings, because I totally value fighting for what is right and I am in love with the idea of freedom. I enjoy being in nature, going on adventures, and experiencing the beauty and fullness of life.

"I dream of working toward a graduate degree in Ethnomusicology, studying the restoration of music and cultural identity..."

I am a highly enthusiastic, creative, and value-driven individual, currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Global Studies with an emphasis on culture, literature, film, and the arts in post-communist regions. I dream of working toward a graduate degree in Ethnomusicology, studying the restoration of music and cultural identity, as well as the social, political, and cultural transformations that take place in regions that have faced extreme political oppression.

"I firmly believe that music can unite people against impossible odds."

Because I believe there is so much power in the human voice and so much beauty in the freedom of expression, I want to teach music in post-conflict regions and give people the chance to have their voices heard. I want to overpower the corruption and injustice in this world with the restoration and emotional healing that music brings. I firmly believe that music can unite people against impossible odds. It can break down the powers of darkness; it can overcome language barriers, and cultural and political differences. Most of all, I believe music, mutual creativity, and the act of developing a work of art or performance is one of the most intimate ways for people to bond and feel like they are a part of something that is greater than themselves. I want nothing more than to inspire people of all ages to achieve things they never thought was possible.
