Mayan Artist to Visit Tucson
Guatemalan artist Carlos Chavez will be visiting Tucson this September for an exhibition and series of events in conjunction with the Galeria la Sirena and the University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies. The exhibit, which coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, opens September 13th 5-8pm and runs through October 1st, at Galeria la Sirena (2905 E. Broadway). The artist will also speak about how his indigenous identity and historical memory influence his work, on the UofA Campus, Friday September 19th 2-3:30pm (see http://clas.arizona.edu/events or contact Colin Deeds 626-7234 for more details). These events are FREE and open to the public.
Carlos has been called one of the most representative voices of contemporary Mayan art and his work has shown in Europe, Japan and the U.S. Although deeply rooted in his native Mayan tradition and symbolism, as well as the painful history of his country and people, Carlos’ work is surprisingly universal in its accessibility. While his paintings manifest the pain and anguish felt by Mayan communities for centuries, it also conveys the hopes and dreams of his people.
Carlos will also appear alongside UA Anthropology Professor Linda Green at a benefit for the Guatemalan Acupuncture and Medical Aid Project (GUAMAP) entitled Tejiendo la esperanza (Weaving Hope) on Saturday, September 27th from 4:30-7:00pm at the Galeria La Sirena, (see www.guamap.org for more information, or contact Laurie Melrood 623-6620, suggested donation $20).
Please join us in welcoming Carlos for his first visit to Arizona!
