Dr. Scott Whiteford, the Director for the Center for Latin American Studies, has been carrying out research in Latin America that integrates issues in economic development, political ecology, environmentalism, migration, social movements and power. His most recent research has been collaborative with colleagues from Argentina, Mexico, and the U.S./Mexico border. Previous research has been in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Dr. Whiteford’s research has been supported by the Hewlett Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Center Advanced Study of International Development. He served on a number of fellowship review panels including the National Science Foundation, the Inter-American Foundation and Fulbright.

Teaching

At Michigan State University, where Dr. Whiteford taught before moving to the University of Arizona, Dr. Whiteford was presented the Teacher-Scholar Award, Outstanding Mentor Award and the Distinguished Lecturer Award by the Central States Anthropology Society.

At the University of Arizona, Dr. Whiteford teaches two graduate seminars for the Center, “Migration, Inequality and Borders of the Americas” and Qualitative Research Methods. He is co-teaching a new undergraduate colloquium on the U.S./Mexico border.
