As Associate Director of the Center for Latin American Studies Raúl is the advisor for both graduate and undergraduate students. He teaches a graduate research seminar, the undergraduate capstone colloquium and a freshman colloquium about the U.S.-Mexico border. Raúl also coordinates the internship program. He has received several grants for training Latin American educators and local government members and, as a political scientist, has research interests in Peruvian and Mexican politics. During a Spring, 1999 sabbatical, Raúl conducted research in Peru and Ecuador on the prospects for integration and development along their common border. He is a member of the executive board of Fundación México and the education committee of the Arizona-México Commission. Raúl was born and raised in Bisbee, Arizona and has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Arizona and a B.S in foreign service from Georgetown University. He has been part of the CLAS team since 1986.
