The University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies proudly co-sponsors with the Raul H. Castro Institute at Phoenix College, the documentary Rául H. Castro: Two Cultures, Many Challenges, directed by Sy Rotter and Luis Carlos Romero-Davis.

The documentary depicts the life of Raul H. Castro as Judge, Ambassador and Governor, careers in which he served with distinction. Highlights of these experiences are presented in this 28 minute video biography. Facing discrimination and racial hostility from his earliest days as a Mexican immigrant child, this story of a remarkable man’s achievements is seen in his constant refusal to be restrained by either his Mexican or his U.S. cultural limitations. His determination to succeed in whatever activity he entered is clearly evidenced in this motivational film produced for students and the community.

This documentary is an intimate portrayal of the extraordinary and inspirational life of Raul H. Castro, now in his 91st year, in which he and close friends recall his experiences as an immigrant child facing the prejudices of a Southern Arizona town in the early years of the Twentieth Century, and his determination to overcome these limitations,  eventually leading him to academic, athletic, political, and diplomatic success. It is a film made specifically for an Hispanic High School audience but clearly has relevance for a broader school and community audience.
