Welcome to Center for Latin American Studies

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) was named a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center and received a Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Grant (2010-2014). CLAS hosts an outstanding faculty with particular expertise regionally in Mexico, Brazil and Central America. Thematic strengths include Environmental Studies, Border Studies, Power & Inequality, and History & Culture. The Center offers an undergraduate major and minor; a Masters Degree, with dual degree programs in Journalism, Law, Public Health and Public Administration; as well as a PhD minor option. The Center for Latin American Studies coordinates a broad range cultural events, faculty & student research, outreach and teaching.

  •  On Friday, October 14, Dr. Margaret Wilder, associate professor at CLAS and the School of Geography and Development and associate research professor of environmental policy with the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, presented findings with the binational, multidisciplinary research team of the two-year NOAA Climate-Societal Interactions Program.  Read more about the research...
  • The University of Arizona Center for Latin American Studies (LAS) was recently awarded an Arizona Humanities Council grant to promote the Borderlands Community Film Series.  Together with Hanson Film Institute and the Consulado de Mexico en Tucson, LAS will screen 8 films over as many months in the community of South Tucson at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center and Harkins Spectrum Theater....
