We've seen recent images of Haitian asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of those asylum seekers have been sent back to Haiti. In this roundtable, we will examine current conditions in Haiti, particularly how Haitian social movements are contesting the gangster state.

Mamyrah Dougé-Prosper is an Assistant Professor of Global and International Studies at the University of California , Irvine. She specializes in research on Black social movements in the Caribbean and Latin America – particularly Haiti. Prosper also serves as the international coordinator for the Pan-African Solidarity Network with Community Movement Builders in the U.S.

Mark Schuller is Professor of Anthropology and Nonprofit and NGO Studies at Northern Illinois University and affiliate at the Faculté d’Ethnologie, l’Université d’État d’Haïti. He is author and editor of numerous books on
Haiti, including "Humanitarian Aftershocks in Haiti." New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press. 2016.
