Contemporary Cuba: Collective Visions
This one-month summer program offers students the opportunity to study a unique and controversial country between excursions to tropical beaches and lively nightclubs. The interdisciplinary field-based program uses a social justice lens to examine Cuba's recent history and contemporary processes of change and continuity, focusing on environmental, political and socioeconomic transformations. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.

IDEAS: Antigua, Guatemala
Coordinated by CLAS core-faculty member Elizabeth Oglesby, the IDEAS (International Program for Education and Social Action) study abroad program is a summer, semester or year-long program. It is a unique experience that combines rigorous academics with for-credit internships around themes such as development and public health, ethnic relations and human rights, and indigenous and environmental politics. It partners with the Association for the Advancement of the Social Sciences in Guatemala, one of Guatemala's leading intellectual centers that emphasizes the connection between research and social action.
Students can take a maximum of 12 credits during the summer and 15 credits during the semester.
Required UA Coursework:
- LAS 495F: Colloquium in Latin American Studies (2 credits).
Courses Offered:
- LAS 493: Internship (1-6 credits).
- LAS 462: Special Topics (students can select from multiple below)
- Central American Narratives of Identity and Nationhood (3 credits).
- Visual Anthropology (3 credits).
- Visualizing Biopolitics: Migrations (3 credits).
- Guatemala: Violence, Memory and Struggle for Human Rights (3 credits).

Cultures, Land and Politics in Oaxaca
This research-based eight-week program offers students the opportunity to conduct research in social or environmental science while further offering each student the ability to design and conduct their own research project under the supervision of knowledgeable and experienced local researchers.
The program offers up to 9 LAS elective credits.

Security and Peacebuilding in Colombia
This 10-week program in Bogotá, Colombia, offers an academic experience alongside for-credit internships in security and conflict resolution. Students earn 9 units of U of A credit studying security while contributing to a lasting peace in Colombia. The program includes opportunities to engage the leaders behind the 2016 peace accord, and excursions to peace communities and the comunas of Medellín.
Students will earn 9 units of credit on this program.

- LAS/POL/PA/ANTH 493: Internship (3 units) Internships are tailored opportunities with a flexible schedule. Internship areas include: security sector, NGO, IGO & nonprofit.

Arizona in Brazil
Advance your Portuguese language skills during this six-week summer program in Fortaleza, a city off the north coast of Brazil. Immerse yourself in Brazilian culture by living with a local family and exploring this beautiful country through cultural excursions.
Students will earn 6 units of credit on this program.

- PORT 102 or PORT 305: 2nd Semester Portuguese or Portuguese for Spanish Speakers
