On July 28 millions of Venezuelans cast their votes to elect the next president. Authorities have not published evidence to support those results, in an election that did not meet the standard of a democratic election. Following the election, protests erupted but were quickly suffocated by the authorities in a brutal repression campaign. The arbitrary nature of the elections, the evidence proving Edmundo González Urrutia‘s victory, the detention of about 2,000 people, and the killing of 25 others have drawn international outcry. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) qualified these as state-sponsored terrorism practices and the UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela (UN FFM) found reasons to believe that crimes against humanity have been committed, as part of the same widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population, in support or furtherance of a State policy to silence, discourage, and stifle opposition to the Government of President Maduro. In this context, migration is already showing signs of increase, especially of persons in need of international protection fleeing persecution.

Laura Cristina Dib is the Venezuela Program Director at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), where she works with partners in Venezuela and in the region to advocate for democracy and respect for human rights. Laura is a lawyer and holds a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela. She also has an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
