"Health, Territory and Interculturality: The Work with the Mapuche People of Chile"

This talk explores the issues of health, interculturality and territory in relation to work with the Mapuche people of Chile. It is based on the idea that health, well-being, kume mongen or good living, as it would be said from the Mapuche point of view, is deeply and directly related to the territory and its condition, mainly the maintenance of the sources of water and forests. From this approach, public health policies and interventions must consider the physical body, the social body and the political body of the earth, the "territorial body". The challenge is to address these issues from a more comprehensive perspective, a dialogical approach is necessary to develop appropriate and relevant health policies.
Dr. Ana María Oyarce is a professor at the Salvador Allende School of Public Health at the University of Chile. She works and publishes on Indigenous Peoples and Afro- descendant Populations of Latin America. Oyarce contributes to the System of Indicators of Populations and Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and also works on the Indigenous Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health Project: UNFPA-ECLAC.
