Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Susan Brewer-Osorio
From among the outstanding educators nominated in 2024, CLASP is excited to announce Susan Brewer-Osorio as the winner of the CLASP Faculty Teaching Award.
The award was publicly announced on June 14,2024 at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in Bogotá, Colombia.
Dr. Susan designs classroom activities that emphasize positionality to help undergraduates understand their connections to political and social issues in Latin America. One of her strengths is designing active and experiential learning experiences, including an activity in which students research a “banana sticker” in groups to examine the social and environmental impacts of its journey from its origin to their kitchens. Additionally, she created and served as faculty director in 2019 and 2023 for the Conflict and Peacebuilding Program in Colombia–a 5-week study abroad program supported by collaborations with la Universidad Pontifica Javeriana and Sembrando Semillas de Paz, a grassroots organization.
The CLASP selection committee was greatly impressed by Susan’s commitment to her students and to their communities, and are honored to present her with the Faculty Teaching Award.
