LAS 434/534 – Digital Media and Democracy in Latin America
We are excited to share the final report graduate and undergraduate students worked on during LAS 434/534 – Digital Media and Democracy in Latin America (Spring 2024) with Fulbright Visiting Professor, Dr. Arthur Ituassu. This project was a collaborative effort between the Department of Communication at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona.

The report examines how digital media has contributed to the rise and consolidation of radical right-wing politics across Latin America, with a focus on the cases of Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil), Nayib Bukele (El Salvador), José Antonio Kast (Chile), Rodolfo Hernández (Colombia), and Javier Milei (Argentina). We hope you can take a moment to explore their findings.

Congratulations to the authors: Alvaro Diaz, Brenda Borges Aguiar, Chelsea Guevara, Edward Buck-Shannon, Kristine Witko, Sandra Cecilia Madrid, and Simon D. VanHoute.

Special thanks to Dr. Ituassu who guided the students throughout the class and to Dr. Antonio J. Bacelar da Silva for his editorial contributions.
