Unit Study on Candomble

This unit contains four lesson plans which each span over one class period, making this unit four periods long. Day one focuses on the historical narrative of Candomble, day two focuses on identifying the primary orixas of Candomble, day three focuses on the various rituals and ceremonies practiced in Candomble and day four consists of the role of ancestors in the religion.

Culture Close Up: Capoeira

Contrasting Urban Lifestyles in Brazil

This unit provides background and a conceptual framework for studying the diversity of urban life and Brazilian society. The unit contains 7 lessons, where the first five lessons introduce key notions about geography, population density, history, demographics and distribution of national wealth which prepare students for the final two lessons which focus on urban contrasts and culture in Brazil, which are more complex lessons. Brazil: A Racial Melting Pot

This lesson plan gives an analysis of the racial characteristics of modern Brazil with some historical background. Students will be able to describe the ethnic composition of Brazil, with each individual student focusing on characteristics of the Brazilian population, interpreting data and translating data to pie charts. Students will explore the different definitions of race and gain an understanding on the complexity of racial issues.

Bonkers for Bailecitos in Bolivia

They will improvise rhythms, compose a song, and draw connections across a wide variety of disciplines. The Gaucho Poem Martin Fierro

In this lesson, students will be able to describe the heroic symbol of the gaucho in Argentina and compare it to the familiar figure of the cowboy in the United States. The gaucho is a major figure in Argentine popular culture and symbolizes the spirit of the nation. By reading a short section of the epic poem Martin Fierro by Jose Hernandez, students will become familiar with this Argentine national figure.
