This unit begins with an overview of Brazil's geography, history, culture and various social and political issues. Students will then research one of these topics and present their detailed research findings to their peers in a formal presentation, followed by a group theatrical presentation.
The purpose of this unit is to learn about social projects in some of Brazil's more marginalized communities while focusing on improving literacy skills. Students will complete various readings, data sets, writing assignments, and discussions in order to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Brazil's culture and the success of these particular social projects.
During this unit, students will get a feel for what Brazil is like. Students will learn about basic aspects of modern Brazil including geography, economics, politics, religion, food, climate and education. Students will get a taste for Brazilian culture through music, food, dance and learning basic Portuguese.

The purpose of this lesson is to provide a general overview of some of the issues facing people in the U.S.-Mexican border zone including border history, maquiladoras, migration and more.
Students will learn about the traditional Mexican music form of corridos, which dates back to the 1800's and continues to be very popular. They will analyze the themes and literary devices used in corridos such as "El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez" and "EL Moro de Cumpas". This lesson will culminate in students writing their own corridos based on the traditional form.
