In this lesson students will make their own retablos, which are three dimensional sculptures contained in a box. Students will use the retablos to illustrate a village scene, legend, story or other common topic. Creating a retablo will help students better understand the culture of the Mexican people.

In this lesson, students will create their own paintings and will be able to analyze the technique used in relation to Latin American art, identify some of the flora and fauna in Mexico and discuss the raw materials of art and the artists environment.

In this lesson, students will be able to enumerate some of the different animals and plants that were important in pre-Colombian cultures of Mexico. They will also learn how these were incorporated into art forms through stylization.

This activity focuses on the migration of people from the Caribbean. Students will look at paintings by a contemporary Haitian artist that depict the political life in Haiti. In addition, students will read a poem that describes the poverty in Haiti and expresses the author's sentiments about this poverty. Students will also analyze the messages in political cartoons and construct a Hatian tap taps bus decorating it to illustrate the reasons people leave Haiti.

In this lesson, students will prepare a journal of the plants and animals they would find in the Amazon region. Over 90% of the Earth's plant and animal life is located within the Amazon Basin. Students will get the opportunity to perform research and write a description on their assigned plants and animals.

In this lesson, students will recreate the floating city of Manaus and learn of a different type of home. These cities are made by floating houses which were originally constructed by poor immigrants who could not afford to rent a house on dry land. Just as the houses are made of inexpensive materials, students will use inexpensive materials to construct their own floating house.

In this lesson, students will research information about Brazil, particularly the Amazon River and will illustrate different animals and plants found in the river basin.

In this lesson, learn how to make a sweet from another culture. Students will learn how to make Dulce de Leche, a sweet from Argentina that can be a candy, spread, or ice cream topping.

This unit contains six lessons in which students will learn about the Tigua communities through paintings and indigenous life in general by reflecting on their own cultural practices and listening to personal experiences by Zsuzsa Nemeth.
