South American Adventures


This lesson plan contains two lesson plans and additional information about South America including worksheets on different topics. In the first lesson, students will become familiar with physical maps and their functions, identify key mountain peaks of the Andes mountains of South America and use algebraic thinking to solve equations using positive and negative numbers. In the second lesson, students will become familiar with political maps and their functions, identify capital cities of South American countries and use algebraic thinking to solve equations using positive and negative numbers.

Mapping South America


In this lesson students will examine different aspects of the South American continent including its geography, climate, industry and political boundaries. The goal of the lesson is to have students create a map of South America illustrating a particular aspect of the continent. Students will have a good understanding of different types of maps after this lesson.

Geography of South America


Students will become familiar with physical maps and their functions by creating a physical map of a portion of the Andes while learning about the geography, environment and human cultures of the Andes. Students will work in groups to conduct research about their assigned region of the Andes and will give an oral presentation with their group members.

Colorful Genres in Harp Music from Paraguay

This lesson is divide in three segments that describe three colorful styles of Paraguayan music: the polca galopam the guarani and the polca paraguaya. For this lesson, students should be familiar with playing the guitar and the recorder. In additional to analyzing music styles, students will become acquainted with the geography of South America and develop an awareness of the historical roots of the harp in Paraguay. Note: Tracks will need to be purchased on Smithsonian Folkways to use as materials to complete lesson.

Son Jarocho from Veracruz: Exploration of Music and Dance Forms

In this lesson plan, students will explore the genre of music known as Son Jarocho from the state of Vercruz in Mexico. Students will listen to the music's beats, words and lyrics in order to get to know the culture of Mexico. Purchases of music from Smithsonian Folkways must be made in order to have music to play for students unless you are able to find the music samples online for free. A great way to expose students to some of the music found in Mexico that heavily influences cultures and values.

Mysteries of the Maya Calendar Museum: A Guide for Teachers & Librarians

This guide provides information regarding Mayan Calendars and activities that help facilitate understanding of the use of Mayan calendars. Within you'll find an overview of Maya calendars, the 2012 phenomenon, enrich activities for 4-5th and 6th-7th grades, as well as recommended web links for further extension on the topic. An excerpt from the book "Mysteries of the Maya Calendar Museum" is included at the end and is used to help youth understand the start of a new Maya calendar. Images are included towards the end of the document showing different figures represented on Maya calendars. Just a Minute Teacher's Guide

This guide provides background and activities relating to the book "Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book". The book can be found at the CLAS Library and checked out if needed. Many questions are provided for teacher's to hold a discussion with students. This guide will assist teacher's in teaching about traditions in Mexico such as day of the dead, traditional Mexican foods and Mexican motifs.
