Journey to El Salvador


In this lesson plan, students will get to participate in two fun activities that will help them learn more about the country of El Salvador. The first activity is "Unpacking the Suitcase", where students will get to view the teacher unpacking their suitcase meant for traveling to El Salvador. The second activity is "Tissue Paper Cross", where students will get to create their own cross out of tissue paper which is a material many Salvadoran children use to make things in school.

Learn about a Salvadorian Craft

In this lesson plan, students will learn how to create a Salvadorian craft known as "Seed of God" or "Semilla de Dios", which is a folk art style that utilizes bright colors and is inspired by adobe homes. Students will get the opportunity to practice this folk art style after learning about it, either creating a cross similar to the one they are shown or by coloring in sheets with images similar to those panted onto crosses.

The Galapagos Islands: A Magical Place

This unit includes a thorough background on the Galapagos Islands including where they are, how they were formed and what kind of life resides there. The background notes are followed by a detailed list of lessons which should last about a week. Students will be learning about, investigating and discussing endemic species of the Galapagos Island, challenging students to think about the natural world around them.

Costa Rica Unit


This unit includes 4 separate lesson plans, the first two being social studies, the third focusing on the subject of science and the last focusing on math. This unit provides a well rounded introduction to the country of Costa Rica and the lessons are planned with great attention to detail and instruction. Some of the lessons span out for multiple class periods and others do not. There are adaptions given for each lesson plan so feel free to adapt!

The Rainforest of Costa Rica


In this lesson plan, students will be asked to investigate the topography and climate of Costa Rica, a Central American country known for its rich and colorful rain forest. Students will view a work of art from Costa Rica depicting an animal, prompting them to research animals like the one depicted in the artwork and identify layers of vegetation within the rain forest.

Utilizing the book "My Name is Gabriela", which can be found in the Latin American Studies Outreach Library, this lesson plan provides a guide for various activities that connect to the book. Students will be prompted to complete various writings and partake in their own research. This lesson plan will allow for students to be more comfortable with writing and learn about Gabriel Mistral, the first Latina woman to win a Nobel Prize.
