When celebrating Carnaval in Brazil, masks are worn by both rich and poor alike. This guide gives instructions for both simple and more complex face masks to be made. The simple mask is more suited for young children and the complex mask for older ages. This is a fun way to immerse yourself in celebrating the fun Brazilian festival!
During or after a classroom study on Argentina, students may enjoy making these simple and inexpensive leather craft items. These leather items are popular in Argentina due to the large cattle industry in the country. A natural by-product of cattle is leather and so the leather industry is quite large in Argentina.
This unit is designed for beginning English speakers of other languages and is geared toward all student at a primary English reading level who find animals interesting and the animals of Ecuador especially engaging. Students will learn English by listening to stories about Animals in Ecuador and will create their own PowerPoint focusing on 3 animals they choose to research, presenting it to the class as a final check of their understanding. Students will compare animals of Ecuador to animals of Virginia in order to stimulate critical thinking by comparing and contrasting fauna/animals.
In this lesson, students will investigate various faucets of Venezuelan culture, politics, history and current events to develop an introductory chapter of a guidebook to the country. They then speculate on how the recent ousting and reinstatement of President Hugo Chavez might affect the information provided in their guidebook introduction.
In this lesson students will locate the southern border, listen to a story about crossing the border, discuss the journey brainstorming push/pull factors that might motivate a person to make such a journey, read recent newspaper articles and synthesize what they have learned in a journal entry. In this lesson, students will examine and analyze a wide variety of these cultural mosaics in order to understand foreign" perceptions of conflict and cooperation that will ultimately impact our future international relations and global landscape. Students will participate in a week long simulation of the borderlands and will experience an unequal distribution of classroom resources. They will keep a journal to answer daily reflection questions to help them construe an idea of what the borderlands are like.
This lesson plan is designed for use with the film "Al Otro Lado". This 60 minute film provides a window into issues along the border between the United States and Mexico. A young Mexican man named Magdiel faces an economic crisis in his fishing town. He is unable to make it as a fisherman, so he considers whether to immigrate to the U.S. illegally or to traffic drugs like many of his friends.
In this lesson, students will listen to a corrido and read the words of another corrido. Students will discuss the reasons people leave Mexico and the attraction of the United States. As a group, they write a song telling the class why they would leave Mexico.
In this unit, students will identify choices or alternative actions and their possible consequences in respect to problems of cultural diversity, conflict, cultural change, population and more. Students will discuss major issues facing the contemporary world and hypothesize about possible solutions to these problems.
