Journey to El Salvador


In this lesson plan, students will get to participate in two fun activities that will help them learn more about the country of El Salvador. The first activity is "Unpacking the Suitcase", where students will get to view the teacher unpacking their suitcase meant for traveling to El Salvador. The second activity is "Tissue Paper Cross", where students will get to create their own cross out of tissue paper which is a material many Salvadoran children use to make things in school.

Day of the Dead Unit

This unit contains lesson plans for elementary, middle and high school which teach students about the famous "Day of the Dead" or "Dia de los Muertos" celebrated in Mexico. The unit provides historical background of the holiday as well as the origins of a similar and popular holiday within the United States, "Halloween". The lessons allow students to compare Day of the Dead and Halloween and learn about the significance of the Day of the Dead within Mexico.

Latin American Stereotypes: An Interdisciplinary Approach

This lesson is a very eye opening and different plan which allows students to identify stereotypes that they may have about Latin America and how these stereotypes contribute to people's perspectives of regions, cultures and countries as a whole. Students will be able to analyze information by comparing and contrasting their prior knowledge of Latin America with the information they will learn about the region.

Regions of Chile Using the 5 Themes of Geography


In this lesson plan, students will understand the characteristics of the four regions of Chile which include the Big North, Little North, Central and South. Students will learn about how physical features affect people living in an area and how the people of Chile have adapted to life in these regions.

This lesson explores a case study of authoritarian government in Chile during the Pinochet government and how the conditions faced by Chilean citizens have to do with human rights violations. Chile is compared to the United States with regards to old acts such as the Sedition Act and the Removal of Cherokee Indians which are examples of human rights violations within the United States.
