Reading and Discussing the Role of Women in Slavery

The reading is translated and adapted from a Puerto Rican textbook on women in Latin America. it is designed to teach the often forgotten role of women n the history of Latin America. Students will learn some specific aspects of slavery and will also discover the roe slave women played in shaping Caribbean culture and in the struggle for abolishing slavery.

This lesson will assist students in analyzing some of the consequences that these transnational flows of labor and capital have had for women workers in the Caribbean. Students will describe the interdependence of people and institutions in economic systems evaluate economic action and polices and overall evaluate the role of women in development within the context of Latin America. This lesson is approximately three days/class periods long and includes all necessary materials.

El Sabor del Caribe/A Taste of the Carribean

The purpose of this unit is to infuse Caribbean culture into the Spanish curriculum, with a focus on Puerto Rico, using oral and written literature. The topic of this unit is literature in the Caribbean and the subtopic is food. Students will learn the physical and agricultural geography of the Caribbean and identify foods of the Caribbean. There are three lessons included in this unit.

A Class Project Booklet on Simon Bolivar

In this lesson students will study Simon Bolivar, a military hero, and will share information about him in order to learn of Latin America's struggle for independence from Spain and become acquainted with this great figure in Latin American history. Students will compile each of their reports on Simon Bolivar to make a class booklet detailing his life.

Minidrama Concerning Machismo

This lesson deals with the different understandings of the meaning of "macho" and "machismo" between the United States and Latin America. Students will understand this difference through a reading,mini drama and comparative exercise and discuss the role of "machismo" in both cultures.

Latino Concept of Time, Culture Capsule and Role-Play Activity

In this lesson, students will understand the differing concepts of time in the U.S. and Peru (as well as other Latin American countries) and be able to relate these differences to each culture. The students will also understand the nuances that are connected to the word "manana".

Using Ads to Study U.S. Influence in Latin America

In this lesson, students will learn how to describe some U.S. influences in Latin America after directly experiencing real advertising from several newspapers. They will be able to compare this with Latin American influence on our own market and consumption.

Traveling Latin America


In this fun activity, students pretend to be an employee of a travel agency and design vacations for Latin America. Students will join a group of three and design a travel brochure for one particular country, with the focus on trying to encourage more people to visit your country. A rubric is included for grading students final project.
