Vozes das Margens is a sociolinguistic documentary that offers a moving tribute to the vibrant Portuguese-speaking communities of northern Uruguay. Through a blend of captivating regional imagery, speakers' accounts of their experiences with the languages and engaging real-life experiences, this film offers a celebratory portrait of this unique dialect and culture, while exploring how language, place, and society intertwine in the borderland experience.
Ana M. Carvalho is a professor of linguistics and sociolinguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona, and director of the doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT). Ana specializes in language contact situations, particularly in social bilingualism contexts in border areas. In this field, she has conducted extensive ethnographic research in communities in northern Uruguay, where for the past 30 years she has analyzed issues related to linguistic variation and change, language choice, linguistic attitudes and ideologies, and linguistic landscape. Ana Carvalho also researches and teaches sociolinguistic issues related to Spanish-English contact in bilingual communities in Arizona, U.S., and is the creator of the Corpus of Southern Arizona Spanish (CESA). Her academic output is extensive and includes more than 50 chapters and articles published in academic journals, the editing or co-editing of six books on linguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition and contact, and presentations of her research findings at conferences and universities in several countries. “Vozes das Margens” is her first foray into filmmaking.
