This unit begins with an overview of Brazil's geography, history, culture and various social and political issues. Students will then research one of these topics and present their detailed research findings to their peers in a formal presentation, followed by a group theatrical presentation.
The purpose of this unit is to learn about social projects in some of Brazil's more marginalized communities while focusing on improving literacy skills. Students will complete various readings, data sets, writing assignments, and discussions in order to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Brazil's culture and the success of these particular social projects.
During this unit, students will get a feel for what Brazil is like. Students will learn about basic aspects of modern Brazil including geography, economics, politics, religion, food, climate and education. Students will get a taste for Brazilian culture through music, food, dance and learning basic Portuguese.
In this unit, students will understand Brazilian history and culture from colonialism to the modern area. They will also learn to draw comparisons between Brazil and other colonies, countries and regions. There are five lessons, each lasting 1 class period within this unit.

In this lesson, students will examine how a music education program is being used in Paraguay to bring about positive social change. They will then predict how Paraguay's economy, politics and culture might be different in 20 years as a result of the program. This guide is a project-based learning experience designed to engage students in the politics, history and culture of Nicaragua through role-playing and discussion. The final product will be a group report reflecting the grown answer to the question: form an opinion on the Nicaraguan Sandinista Revolution.
In this lesson, students will be introduced to causes of the Mexican Revolution and key revolutionary figures. They will gain an understanding of a particular Mexican song form, the corrido, and its role as a vehicle for communicating the news and other important events. Students will be introduced to the causes and outcomes of the Mexican Revolution by learning about key figures. This lesson will culminate in the students creation of original corridos based on current events.
Students will learn about the traditional Mexican musical form of corridos by analyzing traditional corridos, their themes and finally writing their own original corrido.
