This is a two week teaching unit to be worked into the framework of history classes. The unit involves comparing the kown Texas port city, Houston, with selected Latin American port cities. Students will compare the stereotypes of both Texans and Latin Americans, derive symbols for Houston and Latin American cities and compare statistical information in specified areas.

Two lessons are included in this lengthy curriculum material that focuses on child labor and pushes students to discuss the factors behind the use of child labor, potential solutions and implications of those solutions. In this lesson, students will gain an understanding of migration patterns within, to and from Latin America and the Caribbean. This lesson is about the length of 3 1 hour class periods and all materials are included.

Students should be able to make a correlation between U.S. involvement in Latin America during the 1950's-1980's. Students should be able to identify key people, places and events with regard to Latin American Revolutions and American protest era movements.

This lesson deals with the different understandings of the meaning of "macho" and "machismo" between the United States and Latin America. Students will understand this difference through a reading,mini drama and comparative exercise and discuss the role of "machismo" in both cultures.

In this lesson, students will understand the differing concepts of time in the U.S. and Peru (as well as other Latin American countries) and be able to relate these differences to each culture. The students will also understand the nuances that are connected to the word "manana".

In this lesson students will learn new vocabulary related to climate change, distinguish between local climate and weather, explore the meaning of average climate data by calculating average temperatures, learn about global warming, role play as climatologists and think critically about climate adaptions.

In this lesson, students will analyze three different viewpoints of the same story and will organize the information provided in the three views. Students will develop an understanding of how history over time become blurred by stories.

In this lesson, students will compare and contrast the purpose of the organizations Humane Borders and Minutemen using a graphic organizer. After students brainstorm, they will gather their information and create a persuasive essay on the main goals of whatever organization they choose to write about.
